In the 19th century bicycles evolved, thanks to the work of several different inventors. In 1817 Karl von Drais who is a German baron made the first development when he created a steerable, two-wheeled contraption. Instead of using clunky wooden prototypes that include chai, brakes or pedal, riders propelled the uses of a 50 pound frame forward by pushing off from the ground with their own feet. It was also known by many names such as ‘velocipede’, ‘hobby-horse’, ‘draisine’ and ‘running machine’ that made Drais as widely acknowledged as the father of the bicycle.
